Android-3.0-Honeycomb-img1

Honeycomb : Google’s Android for tablets

After the recent launch of Android 2.3, codenamed Gingerbread, Google is now planning to begin the year 2011 with sweet experience of its latest Android 3.0, Honeycomb. There are several upcoming innovations in the class of smartphones as well as tablets that are expected to run on the latest Honeycomb version of Android. Google’s VP of Engineering, Andy Rubin, who is also in charge of Android development, previewed the Android 3.0 version through prototype Motorola tablet at the recently concluded CES 2011. The Honeycomb version of Android operating system is basically designed for mobiles and tablets. The upgrade version from Android operating system is determined to face the high end competition from iPad 2.

Earlier versions of Android operating system were designed to support mobile phones but, with the launch of Android 3.0, the traditional trend has been given a backseat as the Honeycomb is designed to efficiently support larger screens like tablet devices. This version offers even better resolution on a 10 inches screen. The user interface with Android 3.0 is seen to be reformed with much clear and user friendly experience as it displays shortcuts to specific applications. Even the home screen is perfectly reformed that gives sharp 3D effect.  The Honeycomb features refined soft keyboard that facilitates faster and error free input with repositioning of reshaped keys. The Gmail application interface offers the new look which is similar to iPad. The screen view is improved as it is split in several segments. The inbox is displayed towards right side of the screen and the message is viewed in the left three quarters when the device is switched on horizontal mode. The application gives completely different look in vertical mode. This mode will display the email list on the entire screen.

Along with this, Android 3.0 Honeycomb version offers voice and video calling features with Google Talk application. This allows you to use either of the front or rear mounted cameras. You can also mute your voice as well as mix videos. Along with this, Android Honeycomb is strongly expected to arrive with improvised VoIP features, music streaming, WebM feature along with WebP support. Android 3.0 supports various sensors such as magnetometer, accelerometer, light sensor as well as gyroscope due to which it can efficiently work on low density screens along with even better performance on tablets. It is also designed to feature latest innovations from Google such as Google Maps 5 which offers 3D interface. It is even reliable during offline status. Google Maps 5 for Android 3.0 Honeycomb features an improved caching mechanism over its earlier versions. In case your phone’s battery level is low and you’re connected to a WiFi network, Google Maps will still fetch maps and other details near to your current location. If the area in question has been cached in your phone, you can still get directions and view locations even in case of complete loss of access to mobile connectivity. Additionally, the Android 3.0 operating system is designed to offer access to more than 100,000 applications through Android market along will uninterrupted access to more than 3 million eBooks from Google.

As always, Google features this Android version with multi-tasking functionalities by providing a task switcher button towards the bottom taskbar. With this you can switch to your desired application in just a single click. These can just be taken as a primer of features bundled with Google’s Android 3.0 Honeycomb operating system.   We can expect Google to unwrap many more features associated with Honeycomb version by March 2011.

ViewSonic ViewPad 10 Tablet Review

ViewSonic has launched its Android tablet, ViewPad 10, at the recently concluded CES 2011.  ViewSonic’s ViewPad 10 is bundled with the best available features to stand apart in the rough tablet market. The Tablet is claimed to be a bridge between a notebook and a mobile. But ViewPad 10 is more inclined towards notebook. The most appealing feature that makes it stand with pride is its dual boot ability that uses either Android 1.6 or Windows 7 operating system.
As the name reveals, the ViewSonic ViewPad 10 features 10.1 inches capacitive multi-touch LCD screen which offers the resolution of 1024 X 600 with LED backlight and supports 16 million colors. Though the resolution is not as high as HD resolution of high end tablets, it provides a reasonable viewing clarity that comes with standard tablets today. Its first appearance is most attractive with matt black edge integrated with 10.1 inches LCD screen and white metallic back. It features a front facing 1.3 megapixel camera which can be used for video chatting or video conferencing. The device with the dimensions of 275 X 170 X 16.5 is comparatively heavier weighing around 875 grams.  Though heavy, the 10.1 inches screen offers amazing visibility while watching videos.
ViewSonic ViewPad 10 comes with dual boot ability that provides the option to select Android or Windows 7 as operating system.  By default, it boots to Android OS if we fail to choose the operating system quickly. Since Windows 7 is not a preferred OS for Tablets so far, Android OS takes booting preference. With Android OS the accelerometer turns the keyboard in horizontal or vertical direction which is not possible in Windows 7 operating system. The use of Windows 7 operating system gives the feeling of handling a PC. ViewPad 10 gets its processing power through Intel Pine Trail N455 1.66 GHz processor and possesses DDR3 SDRAM capacity of 1 GB with additional storage facility of 16 GB SSD. The Chipset used in the tablet is Mobile NM10 Express. The tablet is furnished with microSD card slot to further enhance the storage capacity to 32 GB.
Android 1.6 operating system incorporated with ViewPad 10 doesn’t have direct access to Android market but the application store can be accessed using Wi-Fi connectivity. Bluetooth enabled ViewPad facilitates easy file transfers. With internet connectivity we can easily communicate via emails and instant messaging. The tablet is designed to use dongle for 3G connectivity which can be easily plugged into 2.0 USB port. The device is embedded with two 2.0 USB ports through with we can easily connect the keyboard and mouse for extended usage. Its mini-VGA port enables video output to the bigger screen of television or monitor. The ViewSonic ViewPad 10 is added with headphone jack and microphone socket.
ViewPad 10 can be efficiently used as an ebook reader as well as for playing games.  The tablet offers some cool new features, too. Family Accounts, is one such feature, which allows personalized login to every member of the family. It gives freedom to customise and personalise the look and feel of the device to multiple users without compromising the experience of others. ViewSonic ViewPad 10 offers average battery life as the device consumes power upto 6.5 watt. It is offered with affordable price tag compared to other tablets in its class.
