HP 17-BS019DX 17.3″ Laptop Review

You need not always spend a fortune to get a powerful big screen laptop PC. A detailed look at HP 17-BS019DX may change your perception.  HP 17-BS019DX is a big screen ( 17.3” measured diagonally ) notebook laptop powered by a decent Intel core i7-7500u 7th generation processor, 8GB DDR4 2133MHz RAM and 1TB hard drive.  However, you must agree with compromises that come with budget laptops. For instance, this laptop is not a touchscreen laptop. It doesn’t offer dedicated graphics and integrated graphics is the only graphics option for this laptop. Again, it doesn’t come with a backlit keyboard. It comes with two memory slots and you can expand memory up to 16GB.  If you are looking for a 17.3” laptop with 16GB RAM and dedicated graphics with separate video memory then you can consider Dell i5767-6370GRY. This Dell laptop is powered by the same i7-7500u processor but has 16GB RAM and 2TB hard drive. It also comes with AMD Radeon R7 M445 Graphics, with 4G GDDR5 graphics memory, which allows you to play almost all demanding games in higher resolution. The laptop comes with Full HD display while HP 17 bs019dx comes with 1600 X 900 display. Full HD display offers better picture quality. Another great feature of this Dell laptop is that it comes with backlit keyboard. It supports wireless ac as well. HP 17-BS019DX doesn’t come with backlight keyboard. Both the laptops come with inbuilt CD/DVD drive. Here is a quick review of specs of HP 17-BS019DX.

Note that Intel core i7-7500u is a dual core processor and is not as powerful as i7-7700HQ quad core processor. Intel core i7-7700HQ has 4 cores and offers 6MB of cache. It is a main stream processor which is appropriate for CPU demanding programs like HD video editing, 3D designing/rendering, compilation and music creation.  Intel core i7-7500u operates with base frequency of 2.7GHz and upon system demand the frequency can go up to 3.5GHz, while Intel core i7-7700HQ operates with 2.8GHz of base frequency and the frequency can rise up to 3.8GHZ on system demand. Again Intel core i7-7500u has 4MB of cache while i7-7700HQ has 6Mb of cache. Extra cores, higher clock speed and higher cache make i7-7700HQ more powerful compared to i7-7500u. So, if you need a powerful budget laptop then you can consider MSI GL72 7QF-1057 17.3″ laptop. It is powered by Intel core i7-7700HQ processor, NVIDIA GTX 960M graphics with 2GB GDDR5 video memory plus 8GB RAM. It has full HD display as well. It is installed with the faster 7200rpm hard drive while the hard drive in the HP laptop spins with 5400rpm speed.

HP 17 bs019dx comes with Integrated Intel HD 620 graphics and uses system memory. The laptop can run demanding games but you may have to compromise with settings and resolution.

HP 17-bs019dx could be a good choice if you are looking for a laptop to run Microsoft office or other similar office application, web browsing, occasional photo and video editing, 3D modeling etc. However, the laptop doesn’t come with Microsoft office full version.

HP 17-BS019DX comes with 8GB RAM and the memory is expandable up to 16GB. The laptop comes with 1TB 5400rpm hard drive which is installed with Windows 10 64 bit home operating system. You can replace the hard drive with a Solid State Drive to boost performance and get faster booting. However, you must verify with the vendor if expanding memory or replacing hard drive would void the warranty.

When it comes to ports and connectivity features, the laptop offers 2 USB 3.1 Gen 1 (Data transfer only) ports , 1 USB 2.0, 1 HDMI, 1 RJ-45, 1 headphone/microphone combo and SD card reader.

There is an integrated webcam. For network connectivity, you get  Gigabit Ethernet, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n and Bluetooth. The laptop has a removable battery ( 3 cell, 31whr).

HP 15-cc055od or HP 2DS86UA#ABA Review

HP 15-cc055od or model 2DS86UA#ABA is packed with decent features and can handle a lot of standard applications with ease.  It even supports some of the demanding tasks like Photo and video editing, 3D designing, and music creation. But the laptop is not fast enough for such tasks especially when it comes to rendering. Though the laptop is powered by Intel Core i7-7500u processor, it still is a dual-core Ultra low voltage processor and is not meant for CPU intensive programs. Again, HP 15-cc055od comes with Intel HD 620 graphics which is integrated graphics and uses system memory. The laptop lacks discrete graphics and you can’t upgrade graphics either. The laptop does not come with Solid State drive which offers faster booting and uploading of the program. However, other hardware specs of the laptop are sufficient for casual gaming. You can also consider Acer Aspire E5-576G-81GD which is powered by  8th gen Intel Core i7-8550u processor. The 8th gen processor has 4 cores while 7th gen processor has only two cores. When comes to graphics, the Acer laptop is integrated with discrete NVIDIA Geforce MX 150 dedicated graphics with 2GB GDDR5 video memory and 8GB DDR4 system RAM (expandable up to 16GB). Again it comes with 256GB Solid State Drive and full HD display (1920 X 1080)p which offers accurate color compared to (1366 X 768) display. Like HP Pavilion 15-cc055od, the Acer laptop also comes with a backlit keyboard and inbuilt optical drive.

The Intel core i7-7500u operates at the base frequency of 2.7GHz and frequency can rise up to 3.5GHz. However, the quad-core i7-8550u operates at the base frequency of 1.8GHz and on system demand, the frequency can rise up to 4GHz. It has 8MB of cache while i7-7500u has only 4MB of cache. Both the processor are hyperthreading enabled which means each core can handle 2 threads at a time. Thus, Acer Aspire E5-576G will offer much better performance over HP 15-cc055od.

None of the laptops is the touch-enabled or 2-in-1 laptop. But you don’t need touchscreen interface as Windows 10 works well with the non-touch environment. None of these laptops is work station grade laptop either. As discussed earlier, Intel core i7-7500u is a dual core Ultra low voltage processor. It operates between 2.7GHz base frequency to 3.5GHz turbo frequency and has 4MB of smart cache. HP 15-cc055od offers enough power to run office applications, stream videos and movies, emailing/skype. Please note that it doesn’t come with full version of MS office. It also supports CPU intensive task like HD photo/video editing, 3D modeling, music creation etc. But while rendering, it won’t give you fast performance. If you are more into media editing then you can take a look at Dell 15.6” laptop which is powered by Intel core i7-7700HQ processor ( 4 cores,  each core operates with 3.2GHz- 3.8GHZ and has 6MB of cache), 8GB DDR4 RAM and 1TB 5400 rpm HDD plus 128GB SSD dual hard drive. When it comes to graphics, the Dell laptop incorporates a powerful NVIDIA GTX 1050 dedicated graphics with 4GB GDDR5 video memory. It can smoothly run most of the latest games like Battlefield 1, Resident Evil 7, The Witcher 3 etc. The graphics not only supports PC gaming but also boosts the performance when it comes to running Adobe Photoshop, Sony Vegas Pro software. Though it costs you more, yet it is worth every penny you spend on it. However, the Dell laptop doesn’t come with inbuilt CD/DVD drive and you need to buy an external one at around $30, if required.

HP 15 cc055od is installed with 8GB DDR4 RAM and the memory is not user expandable. Memory and hard drive slots are not easily accessible. It has 1TB 5400 rpm hard drive which comes installed with Windows 10 Home 64-bit operating system.

Model 2DS86UA#ABA comes with an impressive array of ports and connectivity features which include 1 USB 3.1 Type-C Gen 1 (Data up to 5 Gb/s); 2 USB 3.1 Gen 1 (Data Transfer Only), 1 HDMI,1 RJ-45; 1 headphone/microphone combo and SD card reader. Wired network connectivity is supported by Gigabit Ethernet. Wireless connectivity is supported by 802.11 b/g/n/ac and Bluetooth 4.2. As told earlier, you get a backlit key board with dedicated numeric keypad which this laptop.

3 cell 41whr battery offers up to 6 hours of battery backup, depending upon usage.
