HP ENVY 17-s143cl 17t Touchscreen Laptop is an expensive computing device from HP’s envy series but it comes with great specs that justify its pricey tag. It incorporates 7th generation Intel core i7-7500u processor, 16GB DDR4 RAM and 1TB hard drive. On top of that, it offers mid-range discrete graphics, NVIDIA GeForce 940Mx with 4GB video memory, which allows you to play all the latest PC games like Battle field 1, XCOM2 etc. However, it is not a high end discrete graphics card like GTX 960M. The laptop is good enough for Adobe photoshop, lightroom, AutoCAD, Revit, 3Ds MAX etc. If you are buying the machine exclusively for photo and video editing or 3D designing then a Core i7 quad core processor equipped laptop would be better. HP ENVY 17-s143cl 17t doesn’t come with inbuilt optical drive or CD/DVD burner. Even though Intel core i7-7500u is a 7th generation processor, it is still a dual core processor and can’t compete with 6th generation Intel core i7-6700HQ quad core processor. In terms of performance, Intel i7-6700HQ is much powerful than 7th generation Intel core i7-6500u processor. So, if you are looking for a laptop to run CPU demanding applications like AutoCAD, Revit, 3Ds Max or for heavy video editing, music creation and compiling software, then you can take a look at HP Pavilion 17 Touch Gaming Notebook. It is powered by Intel core i7-6700HQ quad core processor, 16GB DDR4 RAM, NVIDIA Geforce GTX 960M with 4GB GDDR5 and 1TB 7200 rpm hard drive. It has a CD/DVD burner and you can also play latest games, even at highest details, smoothly on this Gaming Notebook.
Closer look at specs shows that HP ENVY 17-s143cl has 16GB DDR3L RAM which is slower than DDR4 RAM. NVIDIA Geforce GTX 960M graphics, coming with HP Pavilion 17 Touch Gaming Notebook, is more powerful than NVIDIA Geforce 940MX and 7200rpm drive is faster than 5400rpm drive. The 7th generation Intel core i7-7500u processor has two cores and it operates with base frequency of 2.7GHZ and its max turbo frequency is 3.5GHz. On the other hand, i7-6700Hq has 4 cores and each core operates with base frequency of 2.6GHZ while the frequency can rise up to 3.5 GHz. It has 6MB of cache while 7th gen i7-7500u has 34MB of cache. Both the laptops are built with 14nm fabrication. Thus, i7-6700HQ is a clear winner with its additional two cores and higher cache memory. As discussed earlier, if your work demands more CPU or graphics interaction, then HP ENVY 17 touchscreen with i7-6700HQ processor will be a better option. Envy 17 comes with metallic build while the pavilion 17 is mostly plastic but it’s sturdy.
HP 17-s143cl comes with 16GB DDR3L RAM and the memory is not expandable further. Similar priced other HP Envy 17 touchscreen models that come with same i7-7500u 7th generation processor, offer DDR4 RAM. These HP Envy 17 modes come with 16GB DDR4 RAM, 1TB 7200rpm hard drive, NVIDIA Geforce 940MX graphics with 2GB video memory and also offer backlit keyboard.
All the above mentioned laptops run Windows 10 operating system. However, none of them come with full MS office version. The 17.3” display features full HD resolution ( 1920 X 1080p).
HP ENVY 17 s143cl offers good number of ports and connectivity features which include 2 USB 3.1 Gen 1, 1USB 2.0, 1x HDMI, 1x RJ-45, SD Card Reader and 1x Combination Headphone-Out/ Microphone-In Jack. Network connectivity is supported by Gigabit Ethernet and Wi-fi 802.11 ac with backward compatibility. It also supports Bluetooth. The laptop comes with webcam as well. It doesn’t come with stylus.
4 cell battery pack offers up to 6 hours of battery backup depending upon usage.
